What is perfume?

Perfume has been used throughout history by different civilisations worldwide as a form of aromatherapy. Perfumes are made from distilled flowers, leaves, herbs, fruits, and even animal extracts to provide scents that make you smell amazing. There are various styles to choose from; you’re sure to find a new fragrance you’ll love.

There are several main categories of scents;

  • floral (mimosa, rose, Lily-of-the-Valley),
  • fresh (violet, verbena, mandarin orange),
  • fruity (kiwi fruit, passion fruit)
  • spicy (aniseed).
Different types of perfume explained.

Typically, there are five common types of fragrances.

Parfum

Eau de Parfum

Eau de Toilette

Eau de Cologne

Eau de Fraiche

What is the difference between eau de toilette and perfume?

Perfume is the most vital type of fragrance, containing 15 to 40 per cent aromatic compounds. Eau de toilette contains nine to 15 per cent aromatic compounds, and eau de cologne has just five to nine per cent.

These differences aren’t fixed – a fragrance’s strength depends on how it is formulated, so be sure to check the bottle for more information and indicator of the concentration.

What sets apart each different type of fragrance is the oil concentration.

Parfum

This is the most concentrated of all five perfume types. Parfum contains anywhere between 15 to 40 per cent pure fragrance oil concentration. Often, people mistake parfum with perfume; however, these two are not identical.

Because of its more substantial, heavier, and oilier character, only a few dabs on the pulse points will last you the whole day. Its more aromatic scent makes it easier to identify than other types.

Eau de Cologne

Eau de cologne has the least concentrated of all five perfume types and holds a very low 2-4% fragrance oil concentration. This means that it does not last long on the skin, and you will need to reapply it three times a day like you would with the eau de toilette.

However, this type of perfume has its advantages: it’s inexpensive due to its diluted nature; scents are natural, moisturises your skin and can be used as a body spray throughout the day.

Eau De Parfum

Eau de parfum often referred to as parfum, has a 10 to 15% fragrance oil concentration. Therefore, they contain a lighter oil concentration and more alcohol and water concentration compared to parfum.

Eau de parfum still has some strength and will last on your body for 6 to 8 hours. Unlike Eau de parfum, it’s harder to identify as it is housed in a spray bottle or stopper bottle.

Eau De Toilette

Eau de Toilette is the second most concentrated of all perfume types, and it typically holds a fragrance oil concentration of 4-15%. Compared to Eau de parfum, this perfume is less oily, and alcohol makes up more of its ingredients. This perfume type tends to last for 4 to 6 hours on the skin before you need to apply it again.

Eau De Fraiche

Also known as fragrance water, Eau De Fraiche is the least concentrated type which means it’s the cheapest option. It means freshwater, and it’s great for carrying around with you to “refresh you” throughout the day.

Most Eau de Fraiche fragrances contain around 1 to 3% fragrance oil concentrations. Because of this ultra-light fragrance oil concentration and high alcohol concentration, it usually lasts for about an hour or two, meaning you’ll need to reapply throughout the day.

How long do perfumes last?

The lifespan of a fragrance varies. Factors that affect the longevity of ascent are numerous, making it difficult to generalise how long a fragrance will last.

Some elements can impact longevity, such as:

  • Age (over time, as the smell fades, it becomes more muted by body chemistry),
  • Climate (humidity and heat, this accelerates this process).
  • Alcohol content (the higher the concentration of alcohol in the formula. the shorter amount of time that perfume will last)

How to make my perfume last longer?

Some notes, including citrus and water, are volatile, and they evaporate out of the skin faster. In addition, how and when a scent may be applied can influence its longevity.

Most perfumers agree on the importance of your perfume constantly flowing directly on your skin so you won’t spray the fragrance directly onto it.

It’s recommended that you apply your perfume immediately after getting out of the shower or after moisturising and spray to your pulse areas, including your wrists, wrist and neck, inner elbow.

The warm air of these sections activated the notes helping to diffuse and savour the scent.

Where should I spray my fragrance?

Understanding where you should spray it is dependent on your body chemistry. It usually takes testing to identify which areas are best for you, but generally, the most commonplace is on the wrists. Ideally, you’ll want to be spraying on the pulse points. The pulse points are where the blood vessels are closest to the skin and give off the most heat. This helps the fragrance mix with your body and release the scent into the air, much like an oil diffuser.

The most common places to apply fragrances

Inner wrists

The base of the throat

Behind ear lobes

The cleavage

Inner elbows

If placed behind the ears, make sure you rub it in after application or else it sits on top of the skin and can feel sticky.

Lymph nodes closest to your armpits release chemicals that mix with sweat to emit your personal scent, so placing perfume here before dressing allows your natural musk to integrate with whatever fragrance you have chosen.

What are fragrance notes?

Top notes

The top note is what you can smell first because it evaporates quickly. It has a strong scent but doesn’t last long because it reacts with body heat and sebum from your skin to produce the middle note. Top note fragrances are light and evaporate quickly to your nose. Top notes can be beneficial in masking body odour by dispersing the scent around you rather than focusing it on yourself, but they lose their strength after about 30 minutes, making them the quickest to fade.

Middle note

Middle note fragrances last longer than top notes and take between 30 minutes and one hour to develop. They tend to be more calming or mellow than top notes and create a strong impression once combined with base notes.

Base note

Base note perfumes stick around for hours as opposed to minutes like top and heart notes. Base notes are more pungent smells that emerge later after the other two layers have evaporated.

Heart notes

Heart notes develop within the first hour of wearing your perfume, and they are richer than top or base notes and can provide depth to your fragrance. After it develops, you will smell all three layers together.

Floral notes

A floral note is the scent of a plant, flower, fruit or herb. In perfume, it is used to add a very fresh and natural touch to the fragrance. Two of the most famous rose and jasmine are the foundation of many fragrances.

How to choose a perfume for me?

The most crucial factor in choosing any perfume is testing it – smelling the scent yourself and asking others for opinions. The skin’s natural pH can dramatically affect how a fragrance smells, so this is another reason to test out several options before settling on one.

If you have dry skin, opt for aromas with sandalwood or vanilla notes, while those with oily skin should try citrus scents because they are lighter. Remember that your body chemistry will also affect you, so don’t buy anything if you haven’t tested it!

With the help of professional fragrance designers, enthusiasts can create their most beloved scents right at home.

Perfumes are some of the best things for women because they enhance their natural smell while also having a pleasing aroma that can last throughout the day.

There’s nothing better than great smelling perfume, which could make people notice what you’re wearing depending on how strong it is.

Trying out different fragrances

When you’re trying different perfumes, make sure that you apply them to a patch of skin on your arm, then wait for around 15 minutes before putting any other products on afterwards.

This way, you can tell how the smell reacts with your natural body chemistry and whether you want to buy a whole bottle. If you do not like the way it smells once it has settled in after about 20 minutes, try spraying another sample of the same fragrance on a different area.

What does perfume contain?

The most concentrated and expensive ingredient is the fragrance, composed of essential oils to synthetic chemicals.

Perfumes do not need to list their ingredients, so consumers may need to contact the manufacturer directly if they require more information about what goes into each product.

Why is perfume so expensive?

Perfumes are priced based on the high cost of raw materials, packaging and distribution fees. Competition in the industry is intense so that prices will vary with market conditions. The more concentrated a fragrance is, the more expensive it will be.

How to store fragrances?

Fragrance bottles should be stored in a dark, cool place.. This will ensure that it has a long shelf life and doesn’t lose its scent as quickly as it would at room temperature or leaving it in direct sunlight.
